Ms. Byers joined the firm in 2010.

TRIBAL AFFILIATION: Member, Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

PRACTICE AREAS: Environmental and natural resources law; commercial transactions; business law; contract law; civil litigation; and Federal Indian law, including Tribal economic development, sovereignty and self-determination.

PRIOR LEGAL EXPERIENCE: During law school, Ms. Byers competed in the National Moot Court Competition for the Native American Law Students Association, where she argued that a Tribe’s water rights claim was improperly adjudicated by an administrative agency.  Through the Domestic Violence Law Clinic, Ms. Byers conducted weekly client intake interviews of victims of domestic violence, advised clients on legal and practical matters, and successfully advocated for a client in court. As President of the Environmental Law Society, Ms. Byers helped establish a volunteer project enabling law students to work with local attorneys and faculty to investigate compliance with federal statutes protecting the Sonoran Desert National Monument.  Ms. Byers also served as a legal research assistant to Professor Marc L. Miller, where she analyzed scientific journals, articles, and federal statutes relating to environmental issues, and assisted in updating the 3rd Edition of Criminal Procedures: Cases, Statutes, and Executive Materials. Ms. Byers’ summer experience in law school included a legal internship with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and a federal judicial clerkship with the Honorable David C. Bury at the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona.  After graduating from law school, Ms. Byers worked as a development consultant for a small non-profit in the environmental field and completed a legal internship with the international department of Earthjustice.

HONORS: Ms. Byers received the Outstanding Student Award in Contracts at the Pre-Law Summer Institute for American Indians at the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2005, and received the highest grade in her class on the Legal Writing exam at the University of Arizona College of Law in 2006.
